Crown Hills Community College rated ‘Outstanding’

We’re delighted that Crown Hills Community College, British Fencing’s Official Training Partner, has been graded ‘Outstanding’ in all four areas for the first time in its 75-year history.

Pupils, staff, parents, carers and governors are celebrating after being graded ‘Outstanding’ in all four areas of their recent Ofsted inspection. The inspection, involving five inspectors from Ofsted, was comprehensive and rigorous, and the result is a glowing report on all areas of the school.

Over the past seven years, Crown Hills Community College has been on a journey to go from good to great. This has been inspired by the visionary leadership that has gone above and beyond the norm, to ensure that any glass ceiling placed on a child because of their upbringing, is well and truly removed.

The school inspection report said:

“Pupils are proud to attend Crown Hills Community College. They demonstrate exceptionally positive attitudes and commitment to all of the opportunities that the school provides. There is a real sense of community built on a culture of tolerance and mutual respect between pupils from a diverse range of backgrounds.”

The Ofsted inspectors were particularly impressed by the schools’ exceptional array of enrichment activities, its challenging and interesting curriculum and its provision for the most vulnerable pupils including those with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities). The report also recognised the teachers for their expert delivery of the curriculum.

“Attendance is excellent. Pupils enjoy coming to school. They follow routines without fuss, moving around the school calmly and purposefully.”

“The school has strong links with the local community. It provides support and care for families when they are struggling. Parents and carers appreciate this. Pupils learn how to be good citizens as they take part in community projects and get involved in charity work.”

Ian O’Flynn, Assistant Principal, said:

“We are delighted to have been recognised as an outstanding school by Ofsted, but more importantly, we want to be a great school for our students. Part of this is being able to offer fencing within our curriculum and giving our students the chance to stand toe to toe in competition with those from a more privileged background. It allows our students to put themselves on a level playing field and aspire to be the best that they can be.”

Lee Corry, Deputy Head of the PE Faculty, said:

“At Crown Hills Community College, all pupils participate in Midi-Fence Foil as part of their Key Stage 3 curriculum which raises their awareness of fencing. Pupils also have the opportunity to compete via inter-tutor group competitions. We offer a fencing after-school club which is well attended and enjoyed by pupils. These methods create a pathway in which pupils can be recruited as part of our Sports Academy programme, which aims to enable pupils to fulfil their potential. Students become role models who excel within their sporting context and demonstrate a range of personal qualities, which aid them for future success.

“Sports Academy Fencing provides our pupils with the opportunity to increase their cultural capital through expert coaching and competitive opportunities. Our pupils compete at the British Fencing National School Team Championships annually, at which they have previously experienced success. We are proud of our fencing achievements at Crown Hills Community College and often hold fencing demonstrations at open evenings and celebration events to showcase to the community what our pupils have achieved. Our pupils experience pride and develop leadership qualities as a result be being part of fencing at Crown Hills Community College.”

Crown Hills would like to thank all the pupils, parents, staff and governors for their continued support and dedication to the school.
