Fencing Fun at Salusbury Primary School

We recently visited Salusbury Primary School for an inspiring media day.

Salusbury Primary School, a valued We Are Forging Futures partner, recently welcomed British Fencing for a special content capture day, celebrating the incredible impact fencing is having across the school.

There was a real buzz from the moment we arrived, the excitement and pride from pupils and staff was clear to see. The children truly felt like celebrities. They were so excited to showcase their fencing skills and were eager for us to take photos of them with their friends. Their confidence and enthusiasm was infectious, making it a truly memorable visit for us.

Throughout the day, we had the pleasure of watching multiple groups of pupils from across the school demonstrate what they have learned since the start of the partnership. The children were using plastic swords and showing off their fencing skills through games and one-on-one matches. Seeing pupils confidently perform and support one another highlighted just how embedded fencing has become within the school.

A particular highlight was seeing the outstanding work that Maggie, Salusbury’s P.E. lead, has put in since completing her training with us at the beginning of the partnership. Watching the programme flourish under her leadership was incredibly rewarding. The growth in pupils’ technical ability, confidence, and enthusiasm is a testament to the time and commitment she has invested.

Salusbury Primary School’s love for fencing is unmistakable. While we were there, pupils were approaching their P.E. teacher to ask when they would next get to take part in fencing. The school has taken to fencing like a duck to water, embracing the sport wholeheartedly and embedding it into school life.

We are especially proud to see the impact extending beyond the school gates. Several pupils have already joined fencing clubs outside of school to pursue the sport further — a fantastic reflection of the programme’s success. Many are already talking about future competitions and dreaming of winning medals, showing real ambition and belief in what they can achieve.

Staff at Salusbury Primary School also highlighted the inclusive nature of fencing, allowing everyone in the class to participate. They have recently started introducing seated fencing, giving children with mobility issues or injuries the chance to take part. Staff also spoke of fencing’s positive impact on neurodiverse children, enhancing their coordination, mobility and social skills.

Our content capture day not only allowed us to celebrate the progress made so far, but also reinforced the strength of the partnership between Salusbury Primary School and We Are Forging Futures. Seeing so many young people engaged, inspired and excited about fencing reminds us why these partnerships matter.

With continued dedication from staff and sustained enthusiasm from pupils, we are excited about what comes next for fencing at Salusbury Primary School.
