Strategic support for the work of We Are Forging Futures
Over the past couple of years, we have fostered a productive relationship with the International Physical Activity Association (IPLA).
By working with the IPLA, we have created a shared understanding of the concept of physical literacy in our development of fencing related programmes that have educational outcomes. Our efforts align closely with the work of sector partners and Sport England, who led initiatives to establish a consensus statement on what physical literacy entails last year.
What is Physical Literacy?
The IPLA defines it as “the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge, and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life”. Physical literacy refers to the degree to which we have a positive and meaningful relationship with movement and physical activity. It is a complex and ever-changing relationship. It reflects our connection and commitment to movement and physical activity, influenced by various factors such as our thoughts, feelings, engagement, and experiences. Physical literacy is an essential focus for providing positive experiences of movement and physical activity for everyone, aligning with Sport England’s ‘Uniting the Movement‘ strategy.
At We Are Forging Futures, we differentiate our approach from other interventions and programmes by focusing on motivating students to move, enhancing their confidence and competence. The knowledge and skills developed through our initiatives can be transferred to various aspects of a student’s life, both in and outside the classroom.
We are honoured to work with the IPLA, which demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the sector and our delivery partners in creating positive physical activity experiences. Through this partnership, we aim to amplify the impact of our work and deepen our expertise in Physical Literacy, while sharing our journey with others interested in this field of work.
We are excited to collaborate with the IPLA on future research and projects. If you have any questions about our partnership or would like to learn more about our work in physical literacy, please contact us via: [email protected]
