Primary PE and Sport Premium 2025-26 Confirmed

Last week, the UK Government confirmed that the PE and sport premium will continue into the 2025-26 academic year. Here’s what it means for We Are Forging Futures.
We welcome the government’s announcement that the PE and sport premium will continue into 2025-26, supporting schools in ensuring equal access to physical activity. This includes making sure that pupils take part in moderate to vigorous physical activity for at least 60 minutes a day. For disabled children and young people, the recommendation is 20 minutes per day. Pupils should also have access to two hours of quality PE twice a week, complemented by a range of extracurricular sport and activities.
Schools should use the premium to:
Make additional and sustainable improvements to the PE, sport and physical activity they provide.
Provide or improve equal access to sport for boys and girls.
Ensure teachers have the relevant skills and knowledge to confidently teach PE in a structured way, prioritising continued professional development (CPD) and training where needed.
We Are Forging Futures is British Fencing‘s visual identity representing our work in the education sector, aiming to get young people active through the creative world of swordplay. With the government emphasising a range of activities in their spending guidance, and with few school children having experienced fencing before, We Are Forging Futures helps to diversify a school’s curriculum.
Moreover, because so few children will have tried it, fencing offers a unique playing field. Children who don’t engage in mainstream sport are therefore able to build their confidence, creating a more inclusive environment in the classroom. This is only bolstered by fencing’s unique appeal to young people who are interested in alternative media. The act of equipping a mask and sword allows them to imagine themselves as a different character, playing out swordplay myths and legends.
The confidence built through We Are Forging Futures is not just limited to pupils. When partnering with us, school staff are equipped with the skills and knowledge to deliver swordplay activities to their pupils. Staff are able to learn a new activity, broadening their horizons and expanding their skillset.
Bringing We Are Forging Futures to schools not only diversifies their extracurricular activities, but also allows staff and students to build confidence learning new skills – all recommendations in the UK government’s spending guidance.
Overall, the PE and sport premium highlights the importance of physical activity for young people, contributing to both their physical and mental health. It also allows schools to diversify and to improve the quality of their sports curriculum, giving children access to activities that they may have not otherwise experienced.
